Maria Bedoya was born and raised on Long Island, New York where she grew up with a Colombian father and an American mother. She studied at the acclaimed Rhode Island School of Design where she graduated in 2017 with a BFA in Photography. When she was twelve years old, her parents divorced. Because of this, her photographic work explores familial dynamics and interpersonal relationships, particularly her own. Maria aims to overcome the taboo of making ‘personal’ work through using her unique narrative to relate to a broader audience. She continues to explore themes of femininity and womanhood in her practice, as well as what it means to be biracial in today’s changing society.
